Lava Cameo Cherub Brooch
Here is a rare and fantastic Lava Cameo featuring a delightful Cherub playing the Lyre. The brooch is from the Victorian era and hand carved. The carving itself is a tiny work of art. The cherub has beautifully carved wings, complete with small feathers. His chubby little arms are gorgeously rendered, and he even has a tiny belly button. A detailed ribbon wraps around his body, and he rests in the crescent of a carved moon. The artist who created this was highly skilled to have carved it with such detail in miniature. Lava cameos and carvings were popular in the Victorian period due to the increase of accessibility in travel. These lava jewels were popular Italian souvenirs. Wearing a lava cameo was a sign of being cultured and well-traveled. The color is a natural khaki/soft grey color that is common for lava cameos. The pin on the back is loose from age but still wearable with care. This tiny piece of art is ready to wear, gift, or collect.
