Swiss Enamel Brooch in 18k Gold

Swiss Enamel Brooch in 18k Gold

Here is a wonderful and rare Victorian Swiss enamel Brooch. The brooch is masterfully crafted in 18k solid gold. The center plaque features a beautiful hand-painted woman holding a yellow canary in her hand. Her regional dress is red, white, and blue, and the canary is bright yellow. The primary colors pop nicely on the black ground, and the details are exquisite. Even her tiny earrings are detailed and bright. The openwork gold details around the frame are also beautifully enameled in black and white with small tulip details. The reverse is signed Berne, possibly for Bern, Switzerland. These enamel brooches were popular souvenirs for wealthy travelers. This beautiful brooch is in great condition. However, the original C clasp has been replaced with a safety clasp, and there is some age-related surface wear on the center plaque. Overall, this is a gorgeous little piece of history that is ready to wear, collect, or gift to someone special.

Length: 2.3in (59mm)

Height: 1.7in (43mm)

18k Gold, Professionally tested

Weight 8.6g

Safety Clasp (not original)

• This brooch is over 100 years old and does show wear of age. The center plaque has some light surface scratches seen in photos and video. However, none of the enamel is missing or disrupts her fine details. The black and white enamel is almost pristine. As mentioned, clasp is a replacement. There is a very slight wiggle in the center cartouche from the original manufacturer. All in all, a fantastic collectible piece.

The Condition Report

An item must be 100 years old or older to be considered antique. This means many antiques may have age-related wear. We chalk it up to character and love it, but it is essential that we fully describe any wear, no matter how minor. Each piece is carefully inspected, tested, and fully described before it lands in the shop.
